Edema

Why can't I get into my boots? It mustuh been that bag of gummi worms three weeks ago.

Then, this morning, my foot was noticeably disfigured and my thigh had swelled by a third. I'm obese, but this weight gain was WAY too sudden. Home remedy for edema is to elevate the limb(s) for an hour.

The nueropathy in my feet and in the fingers of my right hand has been unrelenting. I can only walk about 600 feet, round trip. I increased my meds from two times a day to every 7 hours.

What next? Do I wait to find out? The ongoing question.

  1. I have issues at times. I avoid salt and caffeine and booze. Really, I have no fun.

    1. Where am I? That depends. It was -17F this morning. I'm not in the desert.

    2. Anonyymous,

      -17 YIKES!!

Though forecasts & predictions say low 40s to mid-thirties, the ice on the wash-water bowl attests to a bit cooler temps; still nothing like -17 though!

  3. Art has been found. Other than the previously suggested longer term approaches I have no suggestions. Your health issues preclude short-term solutions. You could just go heavy on the hydrochlorothiazide...not sure of the downside of that.

    1. HAH! You're back! HUURRRAAYY!

Thanks for the suggested medication. As it happens, I'm awaiting a call from my cardiologist about a meds increase; I'll mention it.

      What do we do now?

    2. I question drugs and I question the 'natural' solutions but did review this list https://www.healthline.com/health/natural-diuretics#green-and-black-tea and concluded that since green tea is such a bore it would be a simple thing to start drinking that. Your weight and inability to exercise will probably incline your DR to put you on heavy diuretics which will reduce that water but have you peeing or leaking non-stop. There are no simple answers. I'm overweight but should really be exercising a couple hours a day but that doesn't work out. I take 25mg of hydrochlorothiazde in the AM which does a good job as long as I'm not too sedentary.

    3. She, my cardiologist, and he, my primary care physician, are insisting on several blood tests. My existing debt disinclines me to shoulder the 20% I'll have to pay as my only insurance is Medicare. I'll probably give in though, but resentfully. WHY do we have a HUGE military and only a meager (and pathetic) national health-care plan? And what about free University or trade schools?

    4. We have miserable coverage and expensive premiums because that's what Republicans want...and now they are focused more than ever on whacking Medicare and Social Security. Doctors remain focused on keeping people alive forever which is impractical and expensive. You have a myriad of health issues and might want to focus on finding medical resources that are acknowledging of your health issues and approach from a quality of life / palliative / living hospice perspective. It's not like you or anyone else expects that you have twenty more good years. Advice like this coming from the dark, depths of the internet is of the same value as any other resources from dark depths.

    5. Dear Anonymous,

      I have a Rebreather II.

      See:

      https://newmexnomad.blogspot.com/2021/03/re-breather-now-available.html?m=1

It and the support of my loved ones are, at this point, about all the health-related resources I need.

      Thanks for the suggestions, though.

    1. Art!!

As per your suggestion, I contacted Dr. Marin, my cardiologist, about the diuretic. She requested blood work which I hope to have in the next few days.

      Thanks!
