I think we'll stop here. There doesn't seem to be much happening besides the details of the decline.
For those of you who've yet to make the decision, I talked w my friend Trini a few days ago. He did alot of the early work on Phoebe: installed her roof rack and built the custom rack that kept things handy inside near the back ceiling.
Phoebe
Trini was a big guy, round of stomach. He had triple by-pass surgery a year ago and said he's still recovering. As you may know, after they tried stenting and found my three arteries blocked, I chose to take meds instead of surgery. It was the right decision for me.
There're three posts that'll appear after I'm gone. The title of the first is: Relationship ist Alles.
Here's a rousing tune to go out on.
🥕 Happy Travels! 🥕
If that might be it, then I'll say goodbye here. Thanks for following my blog and your affection for my family. I intended to meet you someday, but the cards never lined up. I enjoyed following your blog and wish you adventures in the next thing that comes.
ReplyDeleteThank you, John. I truly enjoyed you and your family and developed a deep affection for all of you.
DeleteI have enjoyed reading your blog for several years and have followed your travels through it. I am sorry this is the end and wish you Godspeed and hope that you will be in the company of good friends when you move to the next life.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind wish, Morongobill. Unaware of you until now, I went to see your blog. I like the way you wrote and wish you'd written more. Good Luck to you! Thanks for stopping to say Goodbye!
DeleteI've been reading your blog since a couple of guys wrote an article in a magazine about picking you up on a muddy road and in their tricked out 4WD and being shocked to discover that you were out there in a Geo Metro :) I have a very hard time travelling myself and living vicariously through you let me see parts of the SW I never even knew existed. Thank you. Godspeed on your next great nomadic adventure through whatever awaits us after this life.
ReplyDeleteHello Graht. How nice to hear from you.
DeleteYes, as I wrote in my blog, the guys were journalists covering the Overland Expo. With my experience in publishing at UNM PRESS, I recognized their status and they were appreciative. Along with the beauty of nature, it was incidents like that that mafe traveling interesting.
I really liked the 50mpg I got with the 3-cylinder hatchback, but these past eight years with Phoebe's 4wd let me see places Eggbert couldn't have gone. I'm glad you enjoyed coming along.
Thank you for your kind wish for the NEXT nomadic adventure. Perhaps we'll meet in our travels "out there."
Your posts have been enjoyable and pleasant. As a closet artist (and god knows what else) your history and living with the arts has been a wake up call and reminder to me to create and enjoy each day. Our worlds are far apart but it has been a good with rewards from the posts. My own blogging has fallen to wayside (long story); you would have enjoyed some of my work. The past couple of years some of my best friends have been taken, and I miss them. You via your posts and our brief exchanges will be another void difficult to fill. And fucking Phoebe, the trials, joys, breakdowns and such. You should be comfortable. Embrace the hospice. They've helped many people. You'll be special for them. Dates do seem somewhat harsh but as you allude, what if you reach a point where you cannot do your part. I have no answer for that. 'Godspeed' seems to be the expression to use regardless of one's belief or hopes for the next phase. Deciding to look that up Google presents 'According to Oxford Languages, “Godspeed” is an exclamation meaning “an expression of good wishes to a person starting a journey.” Common synonyms include “adieu,” “adios,” “bon voyage,” and “farewell.”' Bon Voyage seems too festive and might have a dress code. So...Godspeed. You've left a mark, probably many marks.
ReplyDeleteWishing a "journey beyond" that is far more amazing than you've ever dreamed. I sent you an email too. I'm glad we connected.
ReplyDeleteSafe travels...I've enjoyed your words over the years, not sure I always understood them. What the heck, eh?
ReplyDeleteHello David,
DeleteThanks for the "Safe travels."
Sorry to hear it hasn't always made sense. That may partly be due to me including enough to remind me of what happened, but not wanting to put details on the internet. Then, of course, there's always the chance (likelyhood) that I just wasn't coherent. As ypu say, "What the heck?"
Safe Travels to you too.
What's happened? I'm watching this space with keen interest. You are in my thoughts!
ReplyDeleteDear Anon...and you too, Art,
DeleteI'm still here. And damned if I don't seem to be rising, yet again, from the ashes.
I started a new blog: albertsturkey.blogspot.com So far it's naught but superficial jottings; a means of tracking time, most of which is in a 25' x 15' room. I've been going to the community center gym (free) several times a week and am sloooowly regaining a bit of strength. Still not much in the way of stamina, but I can, once again, heft the three-gallon jugs with two gallons in 'em. That's progress; I was down to only able to lift one.
And now, with unlimited connectivity, I'm watching Youtube videos on how to play the accordion and practicing nearly every other day.
I've never been able to "tune out" the noise of the city. The loud mufflers, crotch rockets (motorcycles) and occasional gunshots have only increased over the 14 years I've been away. Fortunately, I'm losing my hearing and that plus some sound-deadening foam on the window have made it tolerable.
So come on down to Albert's Turkey. It's a cultural wasteland, but there's indoor plumbing...and Michelle Cook (Best of All!).
And I DO enjoy a baaahth.
Welcome news it is. Rock on.
