Though there's a sign denoting the boundary of Fremont National Forest, even twelve miles past it (eastward), the sign on the locked gate read, "Owned and maintained by Collins Lumber Company, Lakeview, Oregon." (Lakeview is on hwy 395 in south-central Oregon. There is gas.) The open gate I found is on the south side at
42.22654,-120.24608
The coordinates are written to be compatible with Google Maps. There is signal in the area.
Last time, encountering indications of private property, I went further east to
42.22635,-120.23303
and went north about 4 miles.
When I tried calling the Fremont Forest office in Lakeview to find out wha'sup, an automated answerer said to hold for an operaror. A few seconds later it said the operator's not available and hung up. Just fyi.
Adel
For those of us who enjoy the treeless steppe, this part of the country feels fresh and unencumbered. The ranches are few and far apart and there's no flyover....none.
The drawback is accessibility. Adel is far enough from Lakeview, the nearest gas to the west, to make it inconvenient to run back and forth. Thus, finding the pumps at Adel "Out of Gas" meant I had little extra to go exploring with. And the store was closed.
The dent in its right side is from my tentative poke as I tried to determine what it is. I had higher hopes for the phone camera but this Pixel 6 has been all-around disappointing.
This feather and mushroom were the highlights of camp about 12 miles east of Lakeview.
This was lying at the edge of a chain-up turnout. It was the beginning of the end.
