Jay Hershey

I got off at Agua Caliente intending to stop at the store, but it'd morphed into a spanking new Chevron. My notes suggested the north side wasn't too exciting so I went the other way.

A mile or so later Jay and his trailer made it too tight to get by without at least a "howdy." But then, we commenced.

As the most decorated police officer in the history of Trenton, N.J., now turned cattle-rancher, I quickly made an appointment for an interview. We met by the water tanks down the road from the mile-marker 8 cattle guard.

    1. A Marine w 35 years in law enforcement, shot once, had his home shot up (luckily, they were away), scion of owners of much of the land around Trenton, it was an honor to make his acquaintance.

He'd spent two hours on horseback chasing loose cows and looked forward to two more that afternoon.

The bull that stopped by to say hello knew its name. Jay said he'd trained him to accept a rope and walk behind him like a lamb.

We avoided politics and religion, but I got the feeling it'd have been a congenial discussion.
