Kaleohano - IZ

I refer you to this post on *Lady Margaret's curlers.* But the link (on her blog) that caught my eye was to this video...

The description below was written by the fellow who put the video on Youtube, MrSrabago.

if anyone is interested.. this was IZ's last live performance. The 3 who came up on stage to his right, was Moon (brother-in-law), to his left were members of the Makaha Sons (the Koko brothers). They were on no speaking terms since IZ's departure of the band and start of his solo career.

The Hawiian in the audience that was shedding tears that they kept panning to is Keali'i Reichel. This was a historic night in Hawaiian music as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau finally reach reconciliation with braddah IZ.

I'm too young to remember this, but my pops, a Kanaka, 3rd generation, born and raised Lahaina says that this night was more memorable than his wedding night.

           ------ END -------

Kealiʻi Reichel, is a popular and bestselling singer, songwriter, choreographer, dancer, chanter, scholar, teacher, and personality from Hawaiʻi. He has spent his life educating the world about Hawaiian culture through music and dance.

Kanaka - Native of Hawai'i

Lahaina - The largest census-designated place in West Maui

Translations of IZ's songs. Kaleohano is #4.

digital photo collage

untitled (lead glance) (2020) is a collage of photographs of galena crystals. The work represents the tangible vibrations of terrestrial radio: Waves transmitted through Earth’s atmosphere for anyone in range to receive.

In 1894 Indian physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose was the first to use galena – a common sulfide mineral also known as lead glance – for detecting radio waves. In the 1920s this technology was adapted for crystal radios, simple unamplified receivers that played a role in the popularization of broadcast radio.

This collage was created with photos of galena crystals taken by mineral collector Rob Lavinsky (iRocks.com) and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. This work is offered under the same Creative Commons Attribution terms.

Interesting essay (in my, MFH's, esteemed opinion)

Multimedia Extravaganza (MME!)

The Fred Fox School of Music at the University of Arizona in Tucson frequently has free concerts. This evening's included computer-modified (enhanced?) instruments, computer-generated imagery and remotely-accessed musicians.

The Final

This was before the one above. It's not clear who is bowing to whom, but I ask you, "Have you ever seen a happier group?"

I had to add the one below too. I couldn't get over how animated each person looks.

In these "post-modernist" events, I sometimes wonder how much humor is intended.

A Wonderful Day!

Maestro Gomez led the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO) through an astounding performance of the overture to Der Meistersinger followed by several of Wagner's leider. Then came Beethoven's 9th symphoby with an 80-member chorus.

All of it was world-class. The ovation was rousing but I was surprised to see many did not recognize the quality of the experience. Oh, well.

I hooted, hollered and coaxed a few more to their feet by shouting, "If you're not standing, you don't know what you just heard.

Packed house.

Dinner was Japanese at Yoshimotu. It was WAY over-rated. An example of people applauding too loudly out of lack of experience. We're slowly learning not to rely on other peoples' reviews. But the stout beer was good and we had a splendid time discussing the performance.

She then hung on the last minutes of the score between the 49ers & the Texas somebodies. Myself, I pride in having gotten through life with only about ten minutes of football; soccer, maybe 45.

A wonderful day!

Bizzaro Secrets & Mazzy Starr

Though they don't give any indication of who or where from, the 'stats' show which posts have attracted attention. Yesterday it was Two Worth Considering.

One was a post by The Marginalian and the other was to Bizzaro's website.

Tired from yesterday's viewing of The R.V. and the 9pm arrival at camp after an evening of laundry meant most of today was spent horizontal.

A friend, appreciative of my ??? on the accordion, suggested accompanying Laurie Anderson. Some how I segued to Ms. Star where I discovered use of the black keys (it's a piano model).

The Pianist

We were perusing the bread. As she leaned slightly in front of me to retrieve her selection, she apologized. After reassuring her, I asked about her pick; it was sourdough. And then, without further ado, we commenced.

She'd moved down from Halfway onto 30 acres and was "spraying weeds." Her eyes lit up when I mentioned the accordion, adding that she'd put in a request (somewhere) to be alerted if "one came in."

She'd started playing the piano at age three but it wasn't until 7 they got her a teacher. She went at it all day, motivating the brothers to cover their ears and plead, "Make her stooooop!"

When I asked how she'd come to Baker she said it was a long story; I suggested we find somewhere to sit, but she had animals waiting to be fed. She suggested lunch in a couple of days. Whupping out my "card," I enthusiastically agreed.

I found a spot a few miles south of Baker with good cell and spent the first day recovering from doing laundry and shopping.

The weather shifted and by the end of the third day it was getting pretty chilly. Time to head south.

But there were twenty minutes or so there where I, once again, experienced the magic of "connection."

Baker City Chords

I've been enjoying noodling, but it's begun to sound repetitive. When I stopped in at The Bead Store in Baker City, the young woman showed me how she and her husband use these three chords to create a "dark" waltz.

Her black shorts and bodice evoked visions of Fetlife, which, at the time, I was thinking about. Her mother, around my age, around my age, was also in the shop. Interacting with the two was a reminder of how my age has moved me beyond the realm of some possibilities.

Herbert von Karajan

P. 741

And slowly but surely the conviction took root that a merciless commitment of all one's available forces was a precondition of successful artistic direction.

To overcome one's idleness and take pleasure in necessary exertion has always lent wings to the intuition of the spirit.

Justin Johnson

As one of the commenters put it: A legend is born.

Interview (written)

excerpt...

I think we all have magical powers, but controlling that power requires learning how to work with it. It all comes down to how closely you observe the universe, and how much value you assign to the energy that organizes the universe. I firmly believe that humans are capable of much more than what is scientifically or medically proven at this point in time. Much of my music and life is guided, not by my own personal choices of reasoning, but by close observation of the organized “flow” of our surroundings. The meaningful synchronicities in life always seem to point us in the right artistic and career directions. Many of the songs on my last album, “If Walls Could Talk,” came from the act of fleshing out a musical “glimpse” that came from something like the image of a full moon rising over the snow, or a lone bird surveying the fog-shrouded hill as the sun was rising. If I put enough of my heart into observing and valuing those moments, they usually give me deep insight and inspiration in return.
