Silver City - Over the Mountain On 152

It was almost warm when I left Rex & Robin's around 11:30 with blue skies and puffy white clouds. After getting supplied in T or C, I headed for Silver City.

Highway 152 is prettier than going to Deming and back up, but it's still winter at Emory Pass. But something insisted that was the way to go. The forecast included the possibilty of snow, but The Pass was clear.

I had to pull over to let one pickup go by. It's nice to have an excuse to drive at 40 mph....breaking in a new engine.

It started to rain heavily as I neared town. Jean-Robert reminded me of my spot in the National Forest and though it was muddy with accumulations of hail, the fresh air and, most wonderful of all, the quiet made it all okay.

And the goddess smiled, and in her inimitable beneficence, stopped the rain long enough for me to unload and settle in.

Silver City - A Space

Jean Robert Beffort's (Zchahn Roe-bAre Bay-four) A Space Studio and Gallery is a bucket-lister's MUST. Now in its ninth year, he made $15.00 the day I visited, but magic is priceless!

Susan (ten years in Rodeo, on the NM-AZ border) and Alan (Tucson) came in and held us spellbound with tales of Moscow, Idaho, where Alan summers, and the topper, this performance by Susan....

I got an email in July, 2020, from a close friend of Susan telling me she'd died of sepsis after a recent surgery.

Stuff

Every time I pull a box off my roof I admire the custom-made rack. There are a couple more (boxes) inside and several pieces of luggage with clothes and other stuff. But I keep a close eye on what's useful and quickly jettison that which ain't. (Gotta hav room 4 the art, dontchya know.)

Thus, while strolling downtown Silver, I indulged a bit of satisfaction when I spotted  THESE folks' rigs. Of course, they're probably a polyamourus family with multitudes of children, animals and other responsibilities.

Still, I paused to savor the fact that MINE all fits inside and on top; no need for a tag-along.

(The dog, was, I surmise, speculating on the tires and trajectory.)

Jean-Robert P. Béffort - Silver City Artist

"Go to A Space," they all said. We found a phone number on the Silver City Art Asocciation's website. He IS on Facebook.

Jean Robert Beffort (pronounced Bay-four), with an accent over the e, French-Canadian via Montana (Here's a short biography) said he'd be there.

Once a car dealership, it's now a gallery, studio, performance space with an area called Art-On-A-Stick where even YOU can partake impromptu.

Back When Tee-Vees came enclosed in wood.

The blue ball (above) is wound ethernet cable. It weighs over 400 pounds.

There's a stage

The link below is from Facebook. It's of Dee Washburn performing "Super-Trucker."

David Mulvenna, Silver City, New Mexico

In celebration of contractualizing our 26-year marriage (we got legally hitched in January), Michelle and I are spending a few days together in Silver City.

Today we met David Mulvenna (DavidMulvenna.com), Fine Artist and Metalsmith. He gave us a tour of his home, the 16,000-square-foot former Elks Lodge.

David talks about a base for an elephant sculpture. It's too big to fit through the doorway so he's gonna take out a window. Once a police officer in Cleveland, Ohio, at age 70 he's contemplating his (estimated) fourth incarnation. Know anyone who wants a 16,000 square-foot project in Silver City?

With Morgana, one of his cats.

(I, MFH, was born in the Year of the Dragon. One side benign, the other fire-breathing.)

"Benign, my ass. You're an idiot."

An aphorism of his own

The building, a block long, includes Vicki's Eatery.

.Michelle acquired this bit of surreality while imbibing at Vicki's. Put it on REPEAT to glean the full effect. Warhol....eat yer heart out.

Silver City - Land of Books, Gelato (Ice Cream) & Shoe Repair

UPDATE 3/2015
It was at Caballo Lake that I discovered my boot was coming apart. The nearest cobbler was Las Cruces, a metropolis notable for being the home of the Southwest Environmental Center, but I was westheaded. In Silver City I found Silver Shoe Repair at 806 N. Bullard...next door to The Curiosity Shop (see below). David Wait tried to charge me $5.00 for a $20.00 job, but I was too sharp for him. He bought the business a year and a half ago and is, I think, still thinking of dark ages wages. Hopefully, if he tries to price his work at 1940s prices, you too will insist on proper compensation. And an excellent job it was!

I owe it all to Karen in the Visitor Center who, on 3/31/14  *thought* there was a bookstore on Bullard Street, but cautioned that, "It may have closed."
It hadn't and as of 3/12/15 still hadn't.

By the time I neared (I walked!!) the end of N. Bullard (back in 2014) I was about ready to accept her surmisal, but something pulled me on. And there, almost exactly, get that, ALMOST exactly fifty feet from the corner of College Avenue is The Curiosity Shop (808 N Bullard). Karen hadn't given a name but being a direct descendant of Rudyard's elephant, I right away expected great things.

She wore a hyacinth-purple sweatshirt and a smile to brighten even a day in Cleveland (Ohio). And though the store is advertised as a gift shop, the collection of used books (and other stuff) is phenomenal. Prices are consistent...between $2.00 and $3.00.

While I browsed, a goateed strolled in and mentioned how difficult his partner was to get along with. The proprietress suggested maybe it was *he* who was difficult. He acknowledged that could be, but that her anger was often an indication of the pain she was in. I returned to my perusaling, but their conversation was more intimate than I've encountered elsewhere. It reminded me of a line attributed to Maya Angelou: I like to foster intimacy, not familiarity.

Even at the low prices I stopped myself at seven. As I stood paying, another man came in, handed her a bag of freshly-cleaned trout, and without a word, went back out. She said he throws most of them back, but brings her some every week.

Obviously, a Hub of the Universe.

Eggbert, micro RV extraordinaire

That's it behind the lampost. Silver Shoe Repair is the blue door on the right.
The shadows were lengthening so I 'cided I'd best be movin' on.

But luck had other ideas. As I was walking back to the car a child descending some steps with an orangefully bright plop in a cup directed me to notice the overwhelmingly mega window text: Alotta Gelato

I asked for spumoni and was told that most cities had a maker who supplied the vendors. He'd seen one recipe that included 28 ingredients and decided one had to draw lines somewhere. With that color still Clamoring In My Mind (John Denver?), I splurged for a medium-sized mango. The quantity was MORE than adequate and carried me into the evening.

When I asked where it came from he replied, "Any idiot can sell it! We make it."

Here's his blog....

They're both worth the trip. And STILL the myriad galleries!

10 miles South of town there's dispersed camping at The Continental Divide Trail on highway 90 a few miles past Tyrone. Local yokels like to come through and pop off a few shots and there's cow shit and flies all over the place but it's free.
